Colorado Wedding Officiants About Bonita Wilcox

Long ago in a land, far, far away (Kansas), my adventures began.  Actually, THE ADVENTURE started when I was 10 years old, in Sister Mary Clarita's fifth grade class at Saint Rose of Lima Grade School. That is where and when I met my husband of forty-four years. At the time, of course, I didn't really notice that he was cute because I was a studious, good girl who sang in the choir.  He was a rowdy and it was later that I found that aspect of him very appealing.

Through elementary school misadventures, high school rejections and romance, and college (University of Kansas) we have know each other, liked each other, disliked each other, loved each other and finally decided that dating was a hassel and got married in 1965. We moved from Kansas to Colorado, from wheatfields to the mountains with $300 and the smallest u-haul in the land. We never looked back.

Here, in Colorado, we had our family, two girls and three boys.  We survived all the trials and tribulations of parenthood mixed in with joys unimaginable.  Potty training, however, is on my short list of things better forgotten.  Our children married and now we have perfect in-law children who graced us with a bevy (11) of even more perfect grandchildren. Of course, each has faults, but don't let me know about them.

As for myself, I have been an educator for all my adult life. First, as an elementary school teacher, then a journalism teacher, and for the last twenty years, a junior high, middle school theatre arts teacher.  Somewhere in there, I was a Director of Religious Education for nine years at a church in Castle Rock. Please don't let the "religious" part scare you.  The more I live, the more I learn, the more I believe that the way to God has many paths. Enough said.

As a theatre arts teacher, I directed forty-four plays from the classics like "The Secret Garden", "Narnia", and "The Hobbit", to historical dramas such as "Black Elk Speaks" and holocaust plays. It was always an adventure. I sponsored an environmental club called GreenKeepers, had a radio show of the same name, was Colorado Middle Level Theatre Arts Teacher of the Year (2003), in Who's Who of American Women (2007, 2008, 2009), and have published articles in education journals. (I am still waiting for my brilliant Harry Potter-type idea. I sit in restaurans and scribble on napkins, but, so far, nothing!)

I love the ourdoors, mountain trekking (feet on the path...no hands gripped feverishly in tiny crevices over endless space!), nature, camping (in a old, canvas Hilary tent which my husband and I have converted into a gypsy camp!), writing, and all kinds of family activities, whenever and wherever. My family, each and everyone of them, are my favorite people.

Officiating at marriages is one more component of my challenging and joyful existence.  To me, a wedding is one of the meaningful moments that help define us. It is an act of trust, love, bravery, hope, and unselfishness.  To be a part of the uniting of two people as they give wholely of themselves to another, is a profound experience.

My life philosophy can be summed up in the following quote by Thich Nhat Hanh:

Waking up this mornng, I smile,
Twenty four brand new hours are before me.
I vow to live fully in each moment
and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion.

Be mindful and grateful for your precious life.
Mr. & Mrs. Wilcox....then and now....
